Lady Vols Look to Secure WCWS Return Against SEC Foe Georgia
The No. 7 seed Tennessee Lady Volunteers softball team begins its quest for a second straight Women's College World Series appearance on Thursday night, hosting the No. 10 seed Georgia Bulldogs in the Knoxville Super Regional. Game 1 of the best-of-three series is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium and will air nationally on ESPN2.
Tennessee (45-10, 16-8 SEC) enters the series with a dominant 21-4 home record, having dropped only two SEC series all season. The Lady Vols swept through the Knoxville Regional last weekend, including a 5-1 win over Virginia in the final, powered by ace pitcher Karlyn Pickens. Pickens threw a complete game in that outing, allowing just one run and striking out nine. The junior pitcher brings a 1.56 ERA and 170 strikeouts over 125.1 innings into super regional play.
Georgia (41-18, 12-12 SEC) also went undefeated in its regional, topping Charleston, UNC Greensboro and Clemson. The Bulldogs are 6-7 on the road this year but come in with recent wins over LSU, Clemson and Oklahoma. Keirstin Roose leads the team with 15 home runs, while Sarah Gordon slashes .404/.464/.725 with 12 homers and 45 RBI. Randi Roelling (18-9, 3.05 ERA) is expected to start in the circle for Georgia.
History and Stakes: A Battle for WCWS Berth
This super regional marks the first meeting of the season between the two SEC rivals, despite both competing in the same conference. According to ESPN, this will be the seventh all-time NCAA tournament meeting between Tennessee and Georgia. Tennessee won the first encounter in the 2010 Women's College World Series and took two of three in the 2012 super regionals, but Georgia swept Tennessee in the most recent postseason matchup — the 2018 Athens Super Regional.
The winner of this series advances to the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City, beginning May 28. Tennessee is seeking its second consecutive trip to OKC, while Georgia last reached the WCWS in 2021. The Lady Vols have now reached the super regional round for the fourth straight year, a testament to the program's sustained success under head coach Karen Weekly.
Tennessee's offense is balanced and deep. Alannah Leach and Emma Clarke share the team lead with 12 home runs each, while Ella Dodge leads the squad with 46 RBI. Georgia counters with Tyler Ellison, who also has 46 RBI, and Roose's 15 homers. The Bulldogs' offense has been clicking recently, having scored 24 runs across three regional wins.
Karlyn Pickens: The Viral Star in the Circle
Pickens has become a fan favorite not only for her dominance on the mound but also for her personality. After Tennessee's regional-clinching win over Virginia, Pickens went viral for a post-game interview in which her teammates repeatedly interrupted her, handing her various objects and placing sunglasses and other items on her head. Pickens maintained her composure throughout, which drew praise from fans and media alike.
"I guess it shouldn't be a surprise that Pickens was able to keep her focus during that interview considering the way she's been able to keep her focus all season while pitching against the top softball competition in the nation," wrote Zach Ragan of A to Z Sports Nashville. Pickens has 14 wins and six saves this season, with nine complete games and a WHIP of 0.91.
How to Watch and What to Expect

For fans looking to follow the broader softball landscape, the super regional round features 13 of the top 16 seeds. Other notable series include Oklahoma State at Nebraska, which also began Thursday. The Women's College World Series field will be set once all eight super regional winners are determined.
