Oklahoma vs Florida: Sooners Debut New Offense, Gators Unveil All-Blue Uniforms in The Swamp
Sooners Travel to Gainesville for First Regular-Season Meeting
Oklahoma and Florida meet Saturday night at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville (7:45 p.m. ET, SEC Network) in a game defined by change on both sidelines. For Oklahoma, it marks the debut of a revamped offensive coaching staff; for Florida, it's a return home and a new look.
The Sooners (4-4) fired offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle on Monday after an offense that had been the biggest factor in the team's .500 record. Head coach Brent Venables promoted tight ends coach Jason Witten, less than a year removed from the high school ranks, to take over play-calling duties. There is also speculation about a change at quarterback, where starter John Mateer has been inconsistent.
"That was a MASSIVE change this week, but it might not actually make a massive difference," wrote Stormin' Norman's game preview, noting Witten has the element of surprise but only five days to transform the same roster.
Florida (No. 24) enters in bounce-back mode after a 27-8 loss to Georgia in Week 9. The Gators are 6.5-point favorites at some books but the line has shifted to 4.5 at FanDuel, with the total at 44.5. Florida is 4-4 against the spread; Oklahoma is 3-5.
Uniforms and Stakes
Florida will debut an all-blue uniform combination — blue helmets with orange script "Gators," blue jerseys and blue pants — for the first time under first-year head coach Jon Sumrall. The blue helmets weren't worn under former coach Billy Napier. Wide receiver Bailey Stockton, a Georgia Tech transfer who leads UF with 35 receptions, modeled the combo.
It is Florida's first home game since Sept. 26, a 52-28 blowout of Ole Miss. A win would give the Gators momentum before the final stretch of SEC play and keep them ranked. For Oklahoma, a victory would steady a season that has seen Venables make a drastic midseason staff change.
The game is the third-ever meeting between the programs and the first on a campus or in the regular season. Vegas and Florida's staff alike are uncertain what to expect from Witten's offense.
Broader Implications
Oklahoma's decision to elevate Witten reflects a growing willingness among coaches to make in-season changes to spark struggling units. Whether it works against a ranked SEC opponent on the road will be closely watched. For Florida, the uniform debut and return to The Swamp signal Sumrall's effort to build a new identity.
As the Sooners and Gators kick off under the lights, the game is less about history — the teams have met just twice — and more about which program's midseason adjustments take hold.
