Kody Brown Exits Sister Wives After 20 Seasons, Leaving Drama and Division Behind

Why Did Kody & Robyn Brown Leave Sister Wives After 20 Seasons?

Kody and Robyn Brown Depart Sister Wives After Two Decades

After 20 seasons and 16 years on television, Kody Brown and his sole remaining wife, Robyn Brown, have officially exited TLC's Sister Wives. The couple did not return for the season 21 premiere, which aired on October 4, 2026. The show, which first premiered in 2010, will continue without its former patriarch and his last standing partner.

The news of their departure was confirmed by TLC in September 2026, ending months of speculation. The exit comes after Kody's divorces from his first three wives: Meri Brown in 2022, Janelle Brown in 2022, and Christine Brown in 2021. Kody, 57, and Robyn, 47, have not publicly commented on their reasons for leaving the series.

Ex-Wives React to the Exit

In the season 21 premiere, Kody's ex-wives shared their reactions to the news. Meri Brown admitted she was "actually surprised" when told Kody and Robyn weren't returning. Janelle Brown said she was "flabbergasted," while Christine Brown acknowledged she "didn't know how to process it all."

But the premiere also revealed lingering tensions. Janelle used the episode to address what she called Kody's "apology tour" from season 20, claiming it was insincere. "There's been no contact since," she said. "And he very publicly torpedoed my character afterwards. So, f— him."

The Coyote Pass Controversy and Janelle's Response

At the center of the post-exit drama is the sale of Coyote Pass, the family's Arizona property, which sold for $1.5 million in April 2025. During the season 20 reunion, Kody alleged that Janelle had tried to orchestrate a "backdoor deal" to sell the land without giving Meri her fair share. Janelle vehemently denies this.

"It was not true," Janelle said in the premiere, speaking to Christine. "Trust me, if I had been scheming, you would not have known it." She explained that Kody had consulted a lawyer who advised him he could sell the property without giving the others anything, since his name was on the title. Janelle claimed Kody threatened to withhold money from Meri unless she complied with his wishes. "The only conversation we ever had was just back and forth, like, me saying, 'Let's get this going,'" she added.

Meri, meanwhile, told cameras she didn't "know all the details" but was under the impression that Janelle and Kody had spoken about selling without her consent. "She and I are not best friends. We don't have full trust," Meri admitted. Janelle called the accusation "a final F-you as he was leaving."

Kody's Estrangement from His Children

The departure also highlights Kody's strained relationships with many of his 18 children. While he remains close to Robyn's eldest children—Dayton, Aurora, and Breanna—and younger kids Solomon, 14, and Ariella, 10, Janelle has estimated he is "alienated from 90 to 95 percent" of his other children.

Christine's daughter Mykelti Padron, once a rare holdout who maintained a connection with Kody and Robyn, said in November 2025 that their relationship is now distant. "We're not talking, but we're not not talking," she said. Mykelti, who is a "package deal" with her children, added that she plans to confront Kody about his relationships with her siblings Truely, Ysabel, and Savanah. "He wants to figure out each relationship individually," she said. "And I want to be like, 'Well why can't we all just get together be happy and love each other?'"

Leon Brown, Meri's child, has publicly called Kody "a joke of a father." Janelle and Kody's son Garrison Brown died by suicide in 2024, a tragedy that further fractured the family.

What the Exit Means for Sister Wives and the Family

Kody and Robyn's departure marks a pivotal shift for Sister Wives. The show will now focus on the lives of Meri, Janelle, and Christine as they navigate life after polygamy. Janelle has settled in North Carolina near her eldest daughter, Madison Brush, and revealed a new romance in August 2026. Christine is celebrating her third anniversary with David Woolley on October 7. Meri continues to build her bed-and-breakfast business in Utah.

The exit also raises questions about the future of the Brown family's financial entanglements, particularly regarding Coyote Pass and other shared assets. With Kody and Robyn no longer filming, the remaining wives may finally address long-simmering grievances on camera.

For fans, the end of an era is bittersweet. Sister Wives was once a cultural touchstone for polygamy in America, but it has evolved into a reality show about divorce, betrayal, and survival. As the premiere aired, many viewers took to social media to express support for the ex-wives and criticize Kody's behavior.

Whether the show can maintain its audience without its controversial patriarch remains to be seen. But for now, the women of Sister Wives are stepping into the spotlight on their own terms—and they have plenty to say.
