Russo Brothers Address Pressure of Evolving Iconic Characters
As anticipation builds for Avengers: Doomsday, co-director Anthony Russo has spoken candidly about the creative challenges of evolving Marvel's most iconic superheroes while honoring their established legacies. In a Q&A following a screening of Avengers: Endgame Encore, Russo explained that balancing forward momentum with fan expectations is "very difficult."
"We love the characters, we love the history, we love them in the same way that many fans do," Russo said (via GamesRadar+). "But the one thing we always like to remind people of is, fandom does not speak with a single voice. There's a wide variety of opinion in terms of who responds to which characters and which versions of which characters people respond to."
Russo, who co-directs with his brother Joe, emphasized that while they respect the characters' journeys, they also need to surprise themselves—and audiences. "We need to surprise ourselves in terms of who those characters are, where they can go, what they can do, what can happen, and in doing that, we hopefully surprise audiences as well," he added.
His comments come nearly a year after a Doomsday trailer showcased a more serious Thor (Chris Hemsworth), a tonal shift following the divisive Thor: Love and Thunder. Russo also noted that the film's full cast has yet to be announced, though confirmed names include Hemsworth and Robert Downey Jr., who returns not as Iron Man but as the villainous Doctor Doom.
Hulk's Fate Teased in Endgame Encore
The recent re-release of Avengers: Endgame as Endgame Encore has added fuel to the speculative fire, with new post-credits scenes that directly set up Doomsday and its sequel, Secret Wars. One scene in particular has drawn attention: Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) is abducted by Doctor Doom after the events of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The scene shows Doom breaking into Banner's underground bunker, declaring, "I've come to collect you," before a Hulk transformation ensues—though the outcome is left ambiguous, with hints that Banner becomes Doom's prisoner.
Speaking to Empire, the Russo brothers clarified Ruffalo's involvement. "[Banner] is certainly involved in the story that revolves around Doom," Joe Russo said. "We will not confirm nor deny his appearance in Doomsday." Ruffalo is not listed in the official cast, and scheduling conflicts with Spider-Man: Brand New Day may have prevented a significant role. However, the door remains open for a cameo, with a larger return possible in Secret Wars, slated for December 2027.
Infinity Vision Strategy Aims to Fill Imax Void
Disney is deploying a new strategy to maximize Avengers: Doomsday's box office potential, given that Imax screens will be occupied by Warner Bros.' Dune: Part Three in December. The studio's "Infinity Vision" program, announced at CinemaCon in April, is a certification and promotion initiative designed to steer audiences toward other premium large formats (PLFs).
The approach was first tested with Avengers: Endgame Encore, which grossed $26 million domestically this past weekend, with 52% of ticket sales coming from premium formats promoted through Infinity Vision. For Doomsday, over 70% of the $50 million-plus in presales are for PLF tickets, indicating strong demand for enhanced viewing experiences.
The move traces back to Disney's decision to delay Doomsday from May to December 2026, which allowed more production time but forced the studio to cede Imax exclusivity to Dune: Part Three. By pushing Infinity Vision, Disney hopes to break Imax's stronghold on premium audiences and spotlight alternative formats like Dolby Cinema and Cinemark XD.
