American Horror Story: 13 Premieres Tonight with Three Episodes
American Horror Story returns for its 13th season tonight, September 24, 2026, at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT on FX and Hulu. The premiere will drop three half-hour episodes at once, kicking off an unconventional release schedule that concludes with the season finale on October 29.
The new season, officially titled American Horror Story: 13, is being billed as a "greatest hits" crossover event that brings back characters from across the franchise's 15-year history. Jessica Lange leads the returning cast, reprising her roles as Constance Langdon (Murder House), Sister Jude Martin (Asylum), Fiona Goode (Coven), and Elsa Mars (Freak Show). Lange also revealed she is playing a fifth, mystery character.
"It really was just the idea of bringing those four characters back — and one mystery character that I'm not going to [spoil]," Lange told Good Morning America on Tuesday. "There is a fifth character, but I won't say who that is, and I'd be curious if anybody can figure it out."
Other franchise regulars returning include Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Angela Bassett, Emma Roberts, and Kathy Bates. Paulson will portray Cordelia Goode from Coven, while Bassett returns as Marie Laveau, and Roberts as Madison Montgomery.
Release Schedule and How to Watch
The season consists of 13 half-hour episodes, with three episodes airing in each of the first two weeks, followed by two episodes per week for three weeks, and a single finale episode on October 29. The full schedule is:
- Episodes 1–3: Sept. 24
- Episodes 4–6: Oct. 1
- Episodes 7–8: Oct. 8
- Episodes 9–10: Oct. 15
- Episodes 11–12: Oct. 22
- Episode 13 (finale): Oct. 29
In the US, episodes air on FX and stream on Hulu the same night. UK viewers can watch on Disney+ starting Friday, September 25, at around 8 a.m. BST. Other regions will see episodes on Disney+ throughout Friday, though exact times may vary.
A Crossover Event Years in the Making
Season 13 represents a significant moment for the anthology series, which first premiered in 2011. Ryan Murphy, who co-created the show with Brad Falchuk, has described this season as a thank you to fans. "This season is a thank you to the fans for continuing to watch," Murphy told The Hollywood Reporter. He also teased nods to past seasons, including original costumes.
The season's official logline promises "an unrivaled 13th installment that will do justice to everyone's most feared number," bringing together an all-star cast to continue the anthology's legacy. The show has been streamed more than 700 million hours globally and has spawned a dedicated fanbase.
Lange's return is particularly notable, as she had previously stated she would not come back after her departure in 2015. Evan Peters, who played Lange's onscreen son Tate Langdon in Murder House, told THR in January that he was "shocked" she returned. Lange's performances in the anthology have earned her two Emmys, and she was nominated for all four of her previous seasons.
Lange also revealed she will perform a musical number in season 13. "He did promise a musical number for one of the characters," she said of Murphy's pitch. "I have to beg, borrow and plead to get anybody to let me sing."
What This Means for the Future of AHS
With its crossover format and return of legacy characters, season 13 could serve as a capstone for the franchise while also testing whether the anthology can innovate beyond its traditional season-by-season structure. The decision to release episodes in batches—rather than weekly—reflects broader shifts in streaming consumption habits, where platforms increasingly experiment with release models to maximize engagement.
Murphy has hinted at potential future projects, but for now, the focus is on delivering a satisfying conclusion to this chapter. The season finale lands just before Halloween, a fitting end for a show that has become synonymous with the holiday.
As audiences tune in tonight, the question remains: will this "greatest hits" approach satisfy longtime viewers while attracting new ones? With 13 episodes and a stacked cast, American Horror Story: 13 aims to answer that question emphatically.
